The Dating/Job Hunting Parallel

Are you still feeling blue about your current job search? Here’s a tip: in between scheduling interviews and posting your resume online, try to brush up on your dating skills.

Allow me to illustrate how the two are so similar with a few examples. Consider your single self. You’ve made the decision to start dating again. What’s the first thing you do? Put yourself out there and make it known that you are looking. You arrange to meet friends for evening drinks where there will be ample mingling opportunities. You try to meet as many people as possible in order to find the right fit for you. You mention to family and friends that you are back on the market, and let them know what it is you are looking for.

Now switch gears and imagine your unemployed self. The first step in the job hunt is to check in with old co-workers, neighbors, friends and family and let them know that you are looking for a new job. You mention your skills, your accomplishments and your previous jobs to help them get an idea of what you are looking for.

If you are out on the town and happen to meet or see someone who looks interesting, you reach out to them to see what they are about and how well the two of you would fit together. The same is true for a job. Take the time to reach out to the HR department of companies you think are interesting. Ask about open positions, send them your resume and schedule an interview to see how well you would fit in.

It is important to be mindful of your goals and objectives when tackling either the job or dating world. Have fun with both and don’t forget that with either if someone doesn’t want to date or hire you that doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong. It just means it wasn’t the right fit!
